To celebrate World Lymphedema Day, the Galician Association of Lymphedema, Lipedema, and Chronic Venous Insufficiency (AGL), an organization that forms part of COGAMI, has scheduled various events during March and April.
One of these scheduled events, coinciding with the commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the AGL association, is the celebration of the 1st National Congress of Lymphedema, Lipedema and Chronic Venous Insufficiency. The Congress is hosted at the Alvaro Cunqueiro Hospital, VIGO-Galicia, on 4-5 April 2025. The Congress is structured in an in-person and online (streaming) format (in Spanish only). Vigo is one of Galicia’s largest vibrant and multicultural cities on the shore of a wonderful estuary and in front of the beautiful Cies Islands.
This commemorative date also serves as an opportunity to publicly make demands for all people living with this disease. Education and improving access to health services are keys to the successful prevention of Lymphedema Stage III (elephantiasis). The First-line treatment strategy for patients with established lymphedema is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and Compression Garments are the cornerstones of therapy.
During
World Lymphedema Day, we seek to increase public understanding of
Lymphatic Vascular Diseases and tackle the social stigma and
undertreatment attached to this treatable disease.
