June has been designated as Lipedema Awareness Month, which gives the chance to raise awareness and make lipedema a global priority. Many patient organizations and medical societies around the world will be launching campaigns to educate patients and healthcare professionals about this condition.
Lipedema is a chronic and progressive disease that consists of an abnormal accumulation of fat cells affecting the lower part of the body and sometimes the arms, which can affect the circulatory and lymphatic systems. It usually occurs during hormonal changes and generally in women. Above all, it manifests itself in the lower extremities. It is painful and in many cases causes frustration in patients due to the lack of information and proper diagnosis and treatment. Its symptoms are often confused with obesity, cellulitis, or other lymphatic pathologies, and it is an underdiagnosed disease, which is why it is very important to give it visibility. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Lipedema a disease in 2018.
